hydroelectric power

Fun FactFun Fact 1

Hydroelectric power facilities in the US can generate enough power to supply 28 million households with electricity, the equivalent of nearly 500 million barrels of oil. Flowing water creates energy that can be captured and turned into electricity. Hydroelectric power is currently the largest source of renewable power, generating nearly 10 percent of the electricity used in the US.

The U.S. uses nearly $1 million worth of energy every minute.

compact fluorescent

Fun FactFun Fact 2

Compact fluorescent bulbs use about 75 percent less electricity than old-style incandescents because almost all of their energy goes to generate heat, not light. Only 10 percent of the energy used by an incandescent bulb produces light; the rest is given off as heat. Switching to compact fluorescent lights, while costing more money initially, would save consumers about $62 per bulb because fluorescents use less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent lights.
